Last Sunday’s Belgian F1 Grand Prix was the most exciting race of the racing calendar. It featured maybe one of the best overtaking manoeuvre when McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton overtook Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen on the start-finish straight to take the race lead on the penultimate lap. Lewis won the race, and with the F1 season entering its finale, he had gained an upper hand in terms of confidence.
But two hours after the prize presentation ceremomy, Lewis was punished with a 25-second penalty which saw him demoted to third place. Felipe Massa was declared the winner with the dubious decision of the three race stewards. The reason : Lewis gained advantage by cutting the chicane of the last corner of the lap. Such a stupid decision it was!
In fact, Lewis did let Kimi regain the lead of a full car length on the start-finish straight. It was Kimi who could not sustain the pressure, driving defensively into the first corner. So, Lewis dived right to take the lead. The duel was so interesting that it kept everyone on the edge of their seats. In other words, pure genius stuff by Lewis to pull off the overtaking move. The telemetry proved that Lewis was 6kph slower than Kimi on the start-finish straight. Why punish a guy to is a pure genius and didn’t do anything wrong?
Ferrari is fast becoming a laughing stock, always resorting to dirty tactics to win races, the drivers’ and constructors’ championship. Another case involved was the McLaren-Ferrari spying saga where McLaren were stripped of all their points and were fined a hefty US$100 million. Maybe McLaren is a threat to them and all the boardmembers of the FIA are Ferrari fans!
Team Ferrari, this is not the way to win. If you really want to win the constructors’ and drivers’ title, win them cleanly. Do it on track, not with the help of the race stewards and FIA. Do not resort to dirty tactics!
